"IFS is a path to Self-discovery and compassion. It reminds us that we long to be understood—and that healing happens when we open our heart."

Understanding IFS

Internal Family Systems (IFS), created by Dr. Richard Schwartz in the 1980s, is a compassionate way of understanding our inner world. It teaches that we all have different “parts” within us, and at our core is the Self—calm, wise, and healing. If you’ve ever said, “A part of me wants this, but another part doesn’t,” you’ve already experienced IFS in action.

Key Ideas

  • Our Inner Team: We are made up of many “parts,” each with its own voice, feelings, and good intentions—even when they clash.

  • The Self: At our center is a compassionate, calm core that can guide and heal our parts.

  • Exiles, Managers & Firefighters: Some parts carry old pain (exiles), others work hard to protect us (managers), and some jump in to soothe or distract when emotions get too strong (firefighters).

  • Polarizations: Parts can pull us in opposite directions—like wanting freedom but also fearing risk. These inner conflicts soften when both sides are heard.

  • Unburdening: When we meet hurting parts with care, they can let go of the heavy roles they’ve carried and step into lighter, freer ways of being.

The Essence of IFS

  • Every part of us has good intentions, even if its strategies sometimes create struggle.

  • Healing begins with curiosity, kindness, and connection to Self.

  • When we listen with compassion, we can transform our inner world and live more fully from who we truly are.
